Brinkman Restoration Provides Living Infrastructure: Implementation of Sophisticated Landscape Development Methodologies, ie. "Make Things Green"
By John Grindon, Manager of Brinkman Restoration
Brinkman Restoration works with urban planners, public utilities, civil constructors, governments and land management agencies to enhance and reinforce living infrastructure. As human population intensifies the pressure on life support systems, the need to recognize and ameliorate the effects intensifies as well. Brinkman Restoration serves a key function in the ongoing effort to bring effective approaches balancing professional management and implementation experience to diverse and complicated restoration challenges.
I joined the company reforestation team in 1984, and the restoration team in 1998. A childhood spent in rural southern Ontario instilled a strong appreciation for fresh air and the outdoors, and planting trees fed that appreciation in spades. In the mid 1990’s I worked in the non-timber forest product (NTFP) sector, establishing product supply relationships with landowners and liaising with community leaders to find sustainable alternatives to traditional forest uses. After several years with Pierre Belanger and Robert Seaton, I took on management of the Restoration Division, with an emphasis in the Greater Toronto area and the BC Lower Mainland. Working with Michael Fischer in Toronto and Bart Muhic in Vancouver, we have transformed hundreds of hectares of marginal urban land to enhance biodiversity and restore ecosystem function.
It is our objective moving forward to foreground the importance of living infrastructure, those systems that underpin our ability to function at the most basic levels. The development and implementation of sophisticated landscape development methodologies are occurring at the intersection of Landscape Architecture, Biology and Civil Engineering. By positioning ourselves at this intersection, we continue the work of ‘making things green’, and demonstrate leadership to a clientele hungry for innovative approaches to sustainability challenges.
